THE PRINT

Andy Warhol was one of the most renowned artists of the 20th century, famed for his obsession with celebrity and consumer culture. These themes pervaded much of Warhol’s work, as he sought to comment on American capitalism whist creating some of the most iconic and enduring images in Pop Art. Warhol's Sunset portfolio produced in 1972 strays away from the theme of celebrity culture. The artworks are simple studies of abstracted sunsets repeating the same imagery of a simple round sun slowly disappearing over the horizon. Warhol printed this work in hundreds of different colour combinations most of which stray from naturalistic colours found in real sunsets, letting the viewer’s imagination run wild. Individual prints in the series evoke varying sensations and emotions based on the colour spectrum Warhol employed.
